If you’ve ever thought about entering one of IIDA’s design competitions but weren’t quite sure where to start — or whether you’d even qualify — you’re not alone. Every year, designers from around the globe reach out with questions ranging from eligibility to deadlines, submissions, and judging. We caught up with Veronica Whitaker, Design Competitions Manager at IIDA Headquarters, to walk us through the process. Her advice? Don’t overthink it — just get started.

So … how many competitions are there? And do I need to be a member to enter?

Let’s clear that up right away: IIDA hosts 12 design competitions. Eleven of them run every year, and one — our Latin America design competition — is biennial. And no, you don’t need to be a member to enter, although members do receive discounted submission fees.

“We get submissions from all over the world,” says Whitaker. “From large firms to independent designers. What matters most is that your work meets the eligibility guidelines for the competition you’re submitting to.”

What if more than one firm worked on the project?

“List them,” she says without hesitation. “We want to credit everyone who played a part. If multiple design or architecture firms contributed, they should be named in the submission form. For showroom or product competitions, make sure to include the manufacturer or distributor.”

Can one project be submitted to more than one competition — or even in multiple categories?

Yes and ... kind of. A single project can be submitted across multiple competitions — as long as it meets the unique eligibility criteria for each. But within a single competition, each project can only be entered into one category.

“That said, if a large project has different parts that fit different categories — a hotel with a spa and restaurant, for instance — you can submit each section separately,” says Whitaker. “It’s all about aligning the design with the intent of the category.”

What does the actual submission process look like?

“You’ll start by clicking the ‘Submit’ or ‘Apply’ button on the competition page,” she explains. “You’ll be prompted to create an account — or log in if you’ve submitted before. Then you’ll pay the fee, and from there, you’ll receive a link to begin your submission form.”

IIDA accepts all major credit cards and Google Pay, and provides clear instructions throughout the process. The form itself varies year to year but generally includes firm details, project context, and your design solution. Be sure to review the most current year’s guidelines before you begin.

What if I’m running behind and need more time?

Extensions happen — but don’t count on them. “If you’re registered or signed up for our Designed for Excellence newsletter, we’ll notify you if the deadline moves,” Whitaker notes. “But it’s always best to aim for the original date.”

When will I hear if I won? And what does winning actually mean?

For most competitions, results are emailed within four weeks of the jury’s final deliberation. Product and showroom/booth competitions are typically judged and announced on-site at design fairs. Winners receive a mix of digital assets — certificates, badges, and social media graphics — and physical trophies, often presented at celebratory events. If you can’t attend, don’t worry: your trophy will be mailed.

“We want our winners to feel proud and seen,” says Whitaker. “Whether that’s through recognition at an event or via a beautifully designed award package arriving at your studio — we celebrate you.”

Any final advice?

“Don’t second-guess your work. If you’ve created something you’re proud of, and it meets the criteria, submit it,” says Whitaker. “We designed these competitions to highlight creativity, excellence, and innovation across the spectrum of design. There’s room for you here.”
