IIDA ANNOUNCES DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE CO. AS THE 45TH ANNUAL INTERIOR DESIGN COMPETITION BEST OF COMPETITION WINNER
CHICAGO, IL – IIDA is pleased to honor Department of Architecture Co.’s Mist Hot Spring Hotel as the Best of Competition winner for the 2018 Interior Design Competition. The annual competition celebrates outstanding interior design and innovative architecture that encourages new ideas and techniques in the design and furnishing of interior spaces. The Best of Competition winner was announced at the annual IIDA black-tie gala, COOL, on Sunday, June 10.
“The future of design is biophilic; designers continue to create projects that are respectful of and deeply connected to the environment,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl
S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “The design of the Mist Hot Spring Hotel allows for the building to integrate with and amplify the surrounding scenic landscape, honoring the natural elements that serve as a draw for visitors from around the world.”
The Mist Hot Spring Hotel is located in Xuchang City, part of the Henan region of China, an area known as a hot spring destination. The design vision achieved by Department of Architecture Co. complements the architecture of the structure while representing the best natural attribute of the site: the country’s finest geothermal underground water destination.
Entries were judged by a jury of design professionals, including Mark Gardner, AIA, NOMA, principal, Jaklitsch/Gardner Architects; Ricardo Nabholz, Associate IIDA, senior associate/interior design director, Mancini Duffy; and Diana Pisone, IIDA, ID+C, team principal, Ted Moudis Associates.
“The Interior Design Competition continues to exemplify the highest levels of design achievement,” said Pisone, on behalf of the jury. “This year’s Best of Competition winner features interiors that successfully capture and celebrate elements of a natural landscape, which create an otherworldly guest experience. It’s a truly resourceful design that brings the landscape into the interior.”
Images of the winning project can be viewed on the IIDA website and will be published in Interior Design magazine, the competition’s publishing partner.
