CHICAGO — International Interior Design Association (IIDA) is excited to announce the Transformation and Innovation Award winner and the Best of Competition winner for the 2024 IIDA Healthcare Design Awards. The Transformation and Innovation Award winner is IKM Architecture for the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Forbes Hospital Emergency Department Behavioral Health Suite (Monroeville, PA). This year’s Best of Competition winner is Perkins&Will for the Whitman-Walker Health, Max Robinson Center (Washington, D.C.).

The IIDA Healthcare Design Awards recognize firms for creative design of healthcare facilities across fourteen categories within Hospitals, Extended Care and Assisted Living Facilities, and Ambulatory. In addition to the above awards, IKM Architecture and Perkins&Will were named category winners for their respective projects including Hospitals, Psychiatric; and Ambulatory, Specialty Clinic.

“This year’s winning projects excelled in cultivating an uplifting space for both staff and patients,” said IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA. “We always look forward to seeing how the healthcare environment can be transformed, and these winning firms set themselves apart from the rest through their masterful incorporation of functionality and ambiance.”

Projects were reviewed by a panel of healthcare design professionals, including Spellman Brady & Company Project Manager and Senior Designer, Christa Barr, IIDA, CHID; Veterans Health Administration Leasing Development & Design Interior Designer, Julie Barfuss, IIDA; and Lee Health Facilities Planning and Design Interior Design Specialist, Paul Cooper, IIDA, CHID.

“The jury is honored to award both IKM Architecture and Perkins&Will for their innovative and moving healthcare design projects,” Barr said on behalf of the jury. “Both of these projects highlighted how color can create a safe and comforting environment, elevating the experience for the patients that will be utilizing these spaces.”

All winners were announced and honored during a celebration at IIDA Headquarters in Chicago on November 6.

There was also an update to one previously announced winner.
