IIDA Unveils The Futures Readiness Index: A Groundbreaking Call to Action to Reshape Design Industry

CHICAGO — The International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and its strategic foresight and industry insights division, IIDA Futures, have released the inaugural Futures Readiness Index. Led by Mark Bryan, IIDA Chief Research and Strategy Officer, the report presents a data-driven framework with quantified readiness ratings evaluating how prepared the built environment is to withstand, adapt to, and leverage multi-industry transformations over the next decade. Synthesizing data from over 1,000 global signals and how they affect more than nine industry sectors; the Index moves beyond static trend forecasting to offer a comprehensive strategic framework and practical roadmap set to transform how the built environment prepares and operates.

As society faces accelerating technological shifts, climate disruptions, and emotional fatigue, the built environment is under unprecedented pressure to adapt faster and deliver spaces that are healthier, more trustworthy, resilient, and responsive. A key element of the Index is a Readiness Assessment. This self-led tool assists stakeholders at all levels within the built environment by assessing how their core capabilities around skills, tools, workflows, governance, adoption, and commercial risk fare against the future of the industry. For 2026, overall operational readiness remains in the early stages with average scores between 1.8 to 2.6 out of 5, depending on capability area.

"The built environment is undergoing a fundamental structural transition," said Mark Bryan, Chief Research and Strategy Officer at IIDA. "Designers are natural futurists because they must incorporate multiple elements to uphold investments in environments that need to last decades.” He continues, “Thus, designing for static or current conditions are no longer sufficient. The Futures Readiness Index is the bridge that connects present-day operations and future resilience by providing clear, data-driven pathways for strategic decision-making."

The Index isolates five central imperatives that will redefine value, practice, and responsibility across the trade and design ecosystem:

  1. Continuity Is a Responsibility: As clients demand ongoing performance and stewardship, the architecture, design, and built environment sectors must move past one-off handoffs to establish review loops, contracts, and fee models that monetize long-term operational continuity.
  2. Human Judgment Is the Greatest Asset: As AI and automated tools make task production easier, human synthesis, interpretation, and decision-making under uncertainty become the highest-value services clients pay for.
  3. Beauty Is Temporal, Relational, and Alive: Design is evolving beyond fixed objects into dynamic compositions that integrate living materials, responsive systems, human states, and digital layers.
  4. Proof Is as Valuable as the Promise: Sincerity around well-being, care, and recovery is shifting from front-of-brief marketing to measurable, legal, and post-occupancy evidence architectures.
  5. Consequential Work Is Moving: Key human functions—care, recovery, aging, and work—are shifting into domestic life, requiring new residential typologies and pricing models built for adaptability.

The Futures Readiness Index outlines specific actionable directives for stakeholders across every tier of the industry:
