In early February 2021, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA Executive Vice President and CEO of IIDA, and Martha Thorne, Dean of the IE School of Architecture, Madrid and Executive Director of the Pritzer Prize, met virtually to discuss why the interior design profession is now more important than ever in our nearly post-pandemic world, and how interior designers can add value in many ways. They were joined by an audience of students and designers from over 50 countries, as they explored design’s role during the pandemic, women in design, equity, sustainability, and the future of education.

By spending more and more time in interior spaces, we are witnessing the direct connection between our environments and well-being. How has the interior design profession evolved and why is it the most important sector to watch today? Cheryl and Martha explore where the interior design field is headed and how academic institutions can contribute to this evolution.

Audience question:
How have you managed to keep inspired or to get inspiration during this time with so little personal contact?

Cheryl Dust

" I find it incredibly inspiring that a lot of barriers have been broken by the pandemic, where we now have access to people and ideas that we may have never had access to in the past."

Martha Thorne:
"
I’ve found that reaching out to people, even ones that I don't know personally, and having really interesting conversations such as this has really helped. We share energy with each other on these screens—connecting with people on a one-to-one basis even if it is virtual, meeting new people, being exposed to new ideas—helps us develop new ways of seeing the world."
