The first discussion of this new series, “The Big Picture with Cheryl Durst," focuses on DESIGN in the broadest sense—from practice to psychology, place, space, and humanity. Here IIDA EVP and CEO Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA, talks with Design Futurist and Director of Research and Innovation at M+A Architects, Mark Bryan, about the rapid changes in our world, exploring how we seek balance and insight into the future, while also living in the present.

Bryan shares what it means to be a design futurist, and its importance both within his firm and in the larger ecosystem of design. Together Durst and Bryan explore some of the challenges and opportunities for architecture and design, and what the next five years might look like—from structure to workplace and culture.

The conversation also digs into the industry segments of community, workplace, senior living, healthcare, education, residential, commercial, retail, and hospitality, exploring where some of the most radical change has happened, considering which changes will be lasting, and what aspects will continue to evolve.
