Panel 1: Healing Neighborhoods: Exploring Hospitality in Today’s Expanding Healthcare Ecosystems
This panel is approved for 1 IDCEC CEU 1 AIA LU credit
As healthcare facilities expand and disperse into communities, creating a new ecosystem of care, hospitality-influenced design plays a role that ranges from spa-like luxury to intentionally inclusive spaces that welcome the uninsured and unhoused. What role does design play in shaping this healthcare ecosystem? What are the needs of our clients in creating these smaller, more nimble facilities? How do we create hospitality and experience that serves local communities, and how can design be used to create health, wellbeing and a universal welcome?
Moderator:
Deborah Wagner, IIDA, CDF Principal, Discipline Leader, SmithGroup
Panelists:
Eric Koffler, IIDA, Senior Associate + Healthcare Market Leader, NBBJ
Anne Gibson, IIDA, I-NOMA, Interior Design Practice Leader, CannonDesign -
Panel 2: Designing for Resilience: Healthcare Futures in Focus This panel is approved for 1 IDCEC CEU 1 AIA LU credit
How do architects create cancer centers with warm and human interiors while meeting uncompromising demands for security? How do hospitals plan for expansion before the first brick is laid? And how do designers embed sustainability and resilience into facility interiors that must stand the test of climate change, pandemics, and shifting models of care?
This panel brings together leading firms — SmithGroup, HDR, and CannonDesign — for an honest look at the real-world constraints shaping healthcare environments. Through three case studies including Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and the University of Chicago Cancer Pavilion, panelists will reveal strategies that reconcile client expectations with design innovation. From security measures that feel invisible yet effective, to future-proofing methods that allow facilities to flex and evolve, attendees will see how design teams “solve for X” in today’s most pressing healthcare challenges.
