Happy New Year, and welcome to 2024!

A fresh start is always reason for excitement. A new year means new opportunities to connect with others, create something surprising, pursue a new direction or deepen your knowledge. It means 365 chances to win Queen Bee on Spelling Bee.

IIDA plans to do all of the above in 2024 (although Spelling Bee is more of a personal goal). Our 30th anniversary year will include expanding our outreach to HBCU design schools, introducing our industry to talented high schoolers through our Design Your World program, building stronger communities around sustainability, impacting interior design legislation in multiple states, and finding new ways to elevate, uplift and recognize the incredible impact of design. We are already in motion on those plans—and we’ve got a surprise or two up our sleeve, so be ready!

We’re also keenly aware that though this new year is an anniversary for IIDA, it’s not a time for looking back. Instead, it represents a chance to shape the future of our industry, the profession, and of design itself. It’s an incredible moment of possibility, as we stand on the cusp of spaces we will experience like never before, materials that challenge the imagination, fresh paradigms for work and play and advancing technology that offers us new tools.

Working toward that shared future, I’m reminded once again that design exists in service to humanity, and that it is the most optimistic profession—visionary, in the truest sense. The future demands both our humanity and our optimism, and empowers designers to create a better world for all, in 2024 and beyond!
