In honor of Black History Month, we sit down with Alexandria Davis, IIDA, a senior associate at IA Interior Architects and the president of the IIDA New York Chapter. In conversation, she highlights the invaluable contributions of Black creatives to America's historical and cultural tapestry and the design world at large. She discusses the transformative power of diversity in the industry, emphasizing its role in fostering innovation, the critical balance between technology and empathy, and the importance of nurturing young talent within the evolving design landscape. Davis passionately advocates for emerging designers to harness their resilience and unique perspectives, inviting us to celebrate the diverse viewpoints and experiences that have significantly shaped and continue to dynamically influence the realm of design and beyond.

Tell us about the unique perspective and experiences that position Black creatives among those who have helped shape America’s history—especially considering contributions in design.

Life is inspiration—the grit, the triumphs, the hindrances, and curiosities, all boil down to what makes creativity impactful; what makes it meaningful. The different experiences of creatives, particularly Black creatives, make visible what may have gone unseen.

Design is how and why something works. Design is a narrative. Different perspectives encourage us to look beyond what is familiar to consider new variables and methods.

Can you talk about the importance of diversity as a learning and growth opportunity?

Diversity isn’t just an opportunity, it’s vital to growth. When everyone has the same viewpoint, nothing evolves and innovation is rarely met. During the course of a project, for example, we have to constantly solve obstacles in our path, that require us to think differently. Something poses a question outside of our understanding and we need to adapt in a new way and learn collectively from new perspectives to resolve what lies ahead. Growth takes more than one vantage point. Inclusivity creates dimension.

What kind of progress do you see happening within the design industry and in what areas you would like to see further focus?

Progress in technology is picking up speed, and the tools available to us continue to expand. However, they are just that—tools. I hope that technological advancement is balanced with progress in empathy and awareness. This presents both challenges and opportunities for the design industry. The most important aspect of our job is to ask questions while simultaneously finding solutions for the human experience. As technology becomes more integrated into life, it's increasingly important that our processes maintain a system of checks and balances, paying closer attention to the fine details and working toward the larger picture. A team that leverages diverse points of view and skill sets helps to reduce built-in bias. This is extremely important in all types of design. I hope we can enhance our awareness of the world around us and use empathy to translate problem-solving and storytelling into the built environment.

Where do you look for inspiration?

Everywhere. I try to learn from every experience and seek out new interactions that can broaden my perspective. Whether it's through art exhibits, music, theater, picking up a new book, trying a new restaurant, sketching what's on my mind, or engaging in casual conversations, inspiration can be incredibly organic.

What's the best piece of advice you can give to emerging Black designers?

Keep going. You are capable of so much more than you realize. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. A significant part of the creative process is personal, and it's crucial to take the time to get to know yourself. Then, bring your best self to whatever situation life presents. What took me a long time to learn is that some days your 100% may look like 80%, and other days it may look like 20%. But that's completely okay because you'll know you still gave it everything you had.
