Creating Change: IIDA Advocacy Workshop
Advocacy VPs and volunteers from across the U.S. gather to talk legislative wins, strategy, and learn how to build community in four CEU-accredited sessions.

This fall, IIDA hosted a two-day workshop series geared towards IIDA Vice Presidents of Advocacy, providing programming and discussions moderated by IIDA Advocacy and Public Policy Manager, Janella Curtis. Attendees heard from chapters and lobbyists across the country about their work and strategies including legislation, relationship building, DEI initiatives, incorporating sustainability into your work and more.

Keynote speaker Tonika Lewis Johnson, founder of The Folded Map Project discussed building programming, overcoming opposition, and affecting policy that supports your work. Each workshop is approved for and eligible for 1 IDCEC CEU credit, to learn more, visit the IIDA Academy page here.

WELCOME AND NATIONAL ADVOCACY UPDATE

IIDA Advocacy and Public Policy Manager, Janella Curtis opens the workshop with a presentation featuring an address by IIDA Executive Vice President and CEO, Cheryl S. Durst, Hon. FIIDA and a focus on key legislative wins. Leaders from the IIDA Carolinas Chapter discussed the impact of SB188 passing in North Carolina, and the IIDA Texas/Oklahoma Chapter shared how they inspired their members and advocates to support their legislative agenda. The session closes with an informative Q&A with lobbyists.

BUILDING A BETTER ADVOCATE

Janella Curtis moderates a discussion with leaders from the IIDA Alabama and Wisconsin Chapters touching on building relationships within the industry, and with colleagues, including architects and other organizations in order to educate and create a stronger community. You’ll also hear about retaining student engagement post-education, and how relationship building has bolstered the bills in both states. This session is perfect for: IIDA Chapter Presidents, IIDA Chapter President-Elects, VPs of Advocacy, VPs of Membership, and VPs of Development

An interactive session with chapter leaders from the IIDA Northern California, Southern California, and Hawaii chapters, and hosted by Janella Curtis, touch on their approach to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEI) advocacy, supporting bills focused on energy and sustainability, and highlighting advocacy before and during the pandemic. You’ll hear about grassroots advocacy and industry and leveraging expertise using your professional design knowledge.
