It’s Here: The Futures Readiness Index

The future is coming at super speed.

A recent statement signed by nearly 200 economists and researchers, including 15 Nobel laureates and the chief economists of Open AI (the creator of ChatGPT) and Anthropic (creator of Claude), cautioned that the effects of artificial intelligence could be “larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame.” The title of the statement? “We Must Act Now.”

But it’s not just tech. We’re seeing major shifts in climate change, geopolitics, education, demographics, wealth distribution, and beyond.

IIDA created the Futures Readiness Index to help the design industry respond to these changes on the horizon, and the shifts that are already in motion. This is your guide to the Index, detailing what it is, how to use it, and why it’s going to help answer the questions keeping you up at night.

What It Is

The Index is a first-of-its-kind diagnostic tool designed to help anyone working in the built environment understand what to do about the future conditions they may face. In other words, it’s a tool to help you assess how prepared you are for what comes next.

Developed through IIDA Futures’ foresight methodology, the Index was built from more than 1,000 data points and hundreds of trends. It translates global data into conditions, scenarios, and readiness insights shaping the future of the industry.

The Index is not a trend report. It’s a practical tool that surfaces where people and organizations are strong today, where capability gaps may be emerging, and how to take action to remain resilient and relevant in the future.

How to Use It

Signals are the raw inputs that help us spot early movement before it becomes obvious. Trends are patterns that appear when several related signals point in the same direction.

Conditions are emerging realities that the built environment is starting to operate within today, and scenarios are plausible pictures of how the future might unfold, allowing you to explore opportunities and challenges.

The Index provides in-depth information about and examples of the above, along with two assessments. The first is an industry readiness assessment, investigating how prepared the built environment is to meet seven possible futures (derived from present-day data). The second is a self-assessment that prompts you to score yourself and assess how ready you are for the seven futures that may unfurl.

From there, the Index offers recommended next steps, concrete action pathways that can help you strengthen your capabilities and get future-ready.
