When the Built Environment Talks Back

Think about how much of your day is spent yelling at things that cannot answer you.

You walk into a conference room, and there is a bank of eight light switches, none of them labeled, none of them in an order that matches the room, and you stand there flipping them one at a time like you are cracking a safe. You follow the wayfinding signage in a hospital, and it confidently sends you to the wrong wing. You are heads-down on a section detail, zooming in and out, trying to work out what is actually happening at that critical design element, and then the RFI comes in from the contractor asking where the detail is that you spent hours working through. Now you are arguing with a PDF that will not argue back. Every one of those is you talking to something that cannot talk back. We do it constantly. 

So how shocked would you be if any one of those things talked back to you? For most of us, it might give us some heart palpitations. But that moment is coming, and it is coming fast. That was why it became one of the questions I kept pondering while building our Futures Readiness Index: 

Are we ready for our spaces, products, and drawings to talk back?

We already talk to our devices. How many of us asked one about the weather yesterday? What is new is that the responsiveness is spreading past the device and into ordinary things. There are urban trees wired with sensors and a local AI model, so you can walk up and ask the tree how it is doing, and it will tell you it is heat-stressed or thirsty. There is a planter that reads its own soil and pings you like a Tamagotchi when it needs water. The tree talks and the planter bugs you. 

Now, admittedly, this is all still out in the world, not at your desk. But the switches, the wayfinding, the PDF you were fighting at the start, a space, a place, a document, those are the ones about to start answering.

Platforms like Trunk Tools are becoming a kind of ChatGPT for the jobsite, turning a mess of drawings and schedules into something you can ask a plain-English question and get a source-cited answer back. There are systems that let you update a 4D BIM schedule by voice, standing on the jobsite, instead of clicking through menus. There are others that let you ask the building model to show every room missing a rating or every door without a closer, in ordinary language, and it just does it. That RFI you were arguing with is about to answer itself, and cite the sheet it came from.

And it is not just the documents. Smart Spaces launched a building assistant called Max, and the pitch is basically talk to your building. An employee asks it to book a desk or find a room. A facilities manager asks why the HVAC is struggling on the fourteenth floor, or how much water the building used yesterday, and gets an answer instead of a ticket and three emails. That unlabeled switch panel you were fighting? This is the version that just tells you which one you want. So the same thing happening to the tree and the lamp is happening to the building you work in and the drawing on your screen. 

Everything is learning to talk back, from the plaza all the way into the documents we live in, and that changes what we design.

When a space, product, or experience can answer for itself, it opens up new opportunities for what design can become, and what we can charge for. Think about it. What could you do differently if the conversation were part of what you delivered? Imagine handing a client a model they can question directly, so they can explore a design feature and understand its value without you in the room to sell it. Imagine the person standing on your flooring being able to ask which spot gets the best light, or a lobby that can tell a nervous first-time visitor exactly where to go.

That impacts the desk where we do the work, the jobsite trailer, the facilities office, and the dealer's showroom where we test the products. A lot of those rooms exist to broker information that is trapped inside something else. The showroom exists so a rep can show what the product looks like in real life. The trailer exists, in part, to answer the questions the drawings could not answer on their own. When the thing can speak for itself, those spaces are then freed up to do something more interesting.

We have spent our whole careers designing things that sit still and wait to be understood, and then we have to stand next to them to explain what we meant. The next era lets the work speak for itself, literally. The switch that tells you which one you want. The lobby that walks a visitor in. The drawing that answers its own RFI. The chair that tells a kid why it is struggling.

So maybe the real question is not whether we are ready to be talked back to. It's what do we want everything we design to say?
