Design has the power to shape and change the lives of people everywhere and support underserved communities–whether it's a school, home, or health clinic. With that in mind, and in collaboration with Howard Brown Health, Eckenhoff Saunders Architects completed the design for a new healthcare facility that intends to expand access to healthcare in Chicago for the LGBTQ+ community.
One of the largest LGBTQ+ health care organizations in the Midwest, Howard Brown Health, serves over 30,000 patients across the North, South, and West sides of Chicago. Howard Brown Health's new facility will include medical and dental care services, family care, behavioral health, social services, a pharmacy, and a community gathering space among other resources.
Eckenhoff Saunders work combines design and functionality, seeking balance and bridging the built structures, the environments, and the communities they serve. For Howard Brown Health it was important to design with the intention of improving the lives of the center's patients and workers.
The five-story clinic, office, and retail building will be located in the heart of Chicago’s Boystown, at the corner of North Halsted Street and West Cornelia Avenue. Multi-story glass windows will surround the lobby creating a light and airy space, and rooftop facilities offer employees and community members a place to relax. The center will also feature behavioral health treatment spaces, and double its patient capacity. Most importantly Howard Brown Health will be able to bring its vision to life: to create a space that serves all equitably no matter how you choose to identify.
