Awards

The IIDA Star Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have significantly impacted the interior design profession and industry through their noteworthy vision and body of work. Past recipients have been honored based upon their constructive and meaningful influence on interior design, and include design innovators, product manufacturers, research specialists, retail establishments, and healthcare innovators. This award is presented and announced in person at the IIDA Annual Meeting.

    • Throughout her nearly three decades with Perkins&Will, Director of Global Diversity and Principal, Gabrielle Bullock, IIDA, FAIA, NOMAC, has led the team and the firm’s clients to massive success at the intersections of architecture and social justice. Bullock was the first African American and first woman to rise to the position of managing director at the Perkins&Will Los Angeles office and is a leader across a number of high-profile and award-winning projects, cultivating a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and equity at her firm and throughout the industry. Bullock is a past president of the IIDA International Board and has say on several industry boards. She is known throughout the field as a leader, changemaker, activist, and visionary.

    Richard Saul Wurman, 2019 Star Award

    2019
    • Richard Saul Wurman’s esteemed professional contributions span decades. Among his many accomplishments: he created and ran the TED conference in 1984 until 2003, and the TEDMED conference from 1995 through 2010. He has chaired a series of other conferences including the International Design Conference in Aspen, California 101, and WWW. Wurman has also written nearly ninety books on architecture, cartography, design, sports, and medicine. He has the gold medal from AIGA, is a Fellow of AIA, a member of Alliance Graphique International, is recognized in the Art Director’s Hall of Fame, and has been honored with the Trinity College Dublin Annual Medal in Discourse. He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Smithsonian’s Cooper Hewitt Museum, a Guggenheim, Graham Fellowships, the Ladislav Sutnar Prize, and Boston Science Museum’s 50th Annual Bradford Washburn Award.
